THE MONSTER HAS ALWAYS LIVED HERE
Inspired by body horror, director Mia Beisert crafts a subtle, yet unambiguous critique of the sexist rules governing society and family that are a living nightmare for so many people. In her short fiction The Monster Has Always Lived Here, a seemingly harmless everyday situation soon congeals into unappetising horror: protagonist Lina gets caught in a uncanny loop that forces her to wash up mountain after mountain of filthy crockery. Vomited-up shards illustrate her growing mental and physical strain, while the meticulously designed setting underlines a state of claustrophobia. Once Lina finally recognises the cause of this terror, violence seems like the only way out.
