HEADBANGER

Created as part of the Animation and Game programme at the Hochschule Darmstadt, Eva Bagus’ animated short places a focus on character and sound design. Under the premise of representing the physical and emotional suffering connected to the menstrual cycle via animation, HeadBanger conveys a dystopian potpourri of pain and noise. It centres on Ren, who is wearing nothing but bloody underwear and is struggling to heave herself up from the floor. Firmly clutching a prescription for PMS medication, she drags herself through nature, with no one else to be seen. Finally, when she is supposedly at her destination, an old vending machine asks for her prescription: in with the prescription, out with the pills. A stab of pain makes Ren fling her head against the machine. Her breakdown is followed by a new prescription – the new promise of a new disappointment.
